Psalm 50 - The Mighty God, even the Lord has spoken
This Psalm is one of my favorites.
This song is based on a song from KJV verses 1-6. You can find that song here
I extended the same tune for the entire Psalm.
Asaph wrote 12 Psalms. The other 11 are all consecutive: Psalms 73-83.
God has spoken and called the earth, that is the human beings on the earth. From the sun-rising to the sun-setting is from the east to the west, that is to human beings of all nations (Matt 8:11; Lk 13:29
This whole Psalm is the direct speaking of God. There is no speaking of man here and hence, no prayer.
This must be Christ's 2nd coming for His Bride. Today it seems that God is silent in the world. (v21
Christ will come when His Wife, the perfection of beauty, has made herself ready (Rev 19:7
- At His 2nd coming, God will judge His people (2 Cor 5:10
- This is God's calling the earth from the east to the west, to rapture His saints at His 2nd coming. This includes both the living and the dead saints. They will be raptured to appear before His judgment seat (v4
The Hebrew verb asaf
translated "gather" means to gather by removing (Gen 30:23; 25:8,17
). I believe it also refers to rapture in Ps 27:10
and Isa 11:12
. The 1st use of the word in the Bible is Gen 6:21
referring to Noah harvesting food to take onto the ark, which is a type of the rapture (Rev 14:14-16
"My saints" are those that have made a covenant with God by sacrifice. This refers to both the Old and New Testament saints. The Old Testament saints were dedicated to God through the Old Covenant which was consummated by sacrifices (Heb 9:18-22
). The New Testament saints are given to God (Rom 12:1
; 2 Cor 5:14-15) through the New Covenant which was consummated by Christ's sacrifice of Himself (Heb 9:13-17,23-28
The heavens shall declare His righteousness because the overcoming saints will be there in the heavens with Him, raptured, and Satan will be cast out (Rev 12:5,9,12
Verse 7 begins the 2nd part of this Psalm.
Verses 1-6 are glorious, telling of the Lord's 2nd coming, the rapture of the saints, and the Lord being glorified.
Verses 7-23 is God's speaking to His people to get them ready for His coming and judgment.
If we, His people, will listen to Him then:
1) God will speak to His people
2) God will witness in us that He is God, and that He is our God.
Lit. Your burnt offerings are before Me continually.
You think that the Lord should be pleased with you because of the sacrifices that you have made for Him. This is wrong. The Lord does not reprove you for making sacrifices for Him, but that alone does not make you well pleasing to Him.
- Lit. for all the beasts of the forest are Mine
"My father owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and He often distributes it one hamburger at a time." - Tom McNaughton
- Here God not only says that all the animals are His, but even that He knows each one of them. It pains Him when any of them die (Matt 10:29; Luke 12:6; Jonah 4:11
). You should have this understanding when you offer to God.
You think that God should be thankful to you for what you have sacrificed for Him. You think that God is poor so He needs your offering and service. Rather we should be abounding in thanksgiving to God, knowing that everything we have and are is given to us by God, so we thankfully give a portion of it back to Him (Luke 17:7-10
Rather than sacrifice, God wants you to do 3 things:
2) Pay your vows that you made unto Him.
3) Call upon Him in the day of trouble.
There will be 2 wonderful results:
1) He will deliver you.
2) You shall glorify Him.
- The people being rebuked here were religious leaders and teachers.
- It is good to memorize this verse. It will speak to you during the day to protect you (Ps 119:11
A thief is someone greedy for things that rightfully belong to others. A thief can be greedy for money, power, position, praise, a following, etc., and is not willing to earn them by rightful means.
Maybe you didn't do the stealing yourself, but you were glad to have someone do it for you.
3 sins in particular are exposed here among religious people:
1.greed - v18a
2. lust - v18b
3. slander - vv 19-20. This is the most emphasized.
- To "sit" is to be at ease. You speak against your Christian brother lightly, without taking the trouble to find out if what you are saying is true.
You slander even the son of your own mother, your fellow Christians brought up in the same church (cf. Rom 16:13
- "I'll show you a thing or two" is literally, "I'll reprove you". I took some liberty with that translation, but I think that is what is meant.
You thought God was on your side because He was silent. His silence indicates He has a problem speaking to you.
"you thought that I am just like you" - the verb "am" is doubled - an infinitive followed by an imperfect. The doubled verb adds the meaning of "definitely" (Gen 18:18; 1Ki 13:32; Ezek 1:3
). "You thought that I am without a doubt like you." Or "You thought that I am certainly like you."
"You that forget God" here are religious people. You think that you are serving the Lord more than others (v16
). You forget the Lord in doing a Christian work, but depend on men or knowledge or assets instead. If you don't consider what the Lord says here, the result is catastrophic. Men will not be able to rescue you. Thus we are in fear and trembling before the Lord (v3
, Acts 9:31
; 2 Cor 5:11
; Phil 2:12
For God to tear in pieces is for HIm to scatter the Jews, or divide the church (1 Cor 11:18-19
). God hates division, but would rather have division than what is described in the previous verses.
What a wonderful ending verse to this psalm. This is my favorite verse in the Psalm.
We all should spend time before the Lord to order our way before Him in all practical things (Phil 2:12
). We should not just be reacting to our circumstances. To order our way is to set our priorities: Thanking the Lord for what He has done for us must be higher priority than sacrificing things for Him.
This verse relates to both matters in verse 14
2) paying our vows to the Lord goes with ordering our way before Him.

Psalm 50 A Psalm through Asaph
The mighty God, even
The mighty God, even the LORD,
has spoken, and called the earth
from the rising of the sun
unto the going down thereof.
the perfection of beauty, God has shined.
He shall come and shall not keep si-i-lence.
2 A fire devours before His face,
and round about tempest rages.
He will call to the heavens
from above and to the earth
in order to judge His people.
Gather My saints together unto Me,
those that have made
a covenant with Me by sacrifice.
And the heavens, they
His righteousness, for God is judge.
God Himself, is judge. Selah.
Listen to Me, My-y people,
and I will spea-eak, O Israel!
And I wi-ill,
witness in you, I am God, you-our God.
I do not reprove you for-or that.
Your burnt offerings are before Me,
9 I'll accept no bull from your house
nor he-goat out of your folds.
for all creatur-ures are Mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills.
of the mountains and the beasts of the field,
They are mine. 12 If
I were hungry I would not te-ell you!
5 for all the world, i-it is Mine
the world and the fulness thereof,
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls?
or dri-ink the bloo-ood of goats?
offer to God thanksgiving.
And pay your vows,
and pay your vows unto the most High
call upon Me, in the day of trouble.
6 I will surely deliver thee.
Also shall ye glorify Me,
But to the wicked God says,
What have you to do to with this?
to be defining My statutes?
Should you take My,
Should you take My covenant in your mouth?
17 Seeing you hate
correction, and toss My words behind you.
When saw a thief, you're pleased with him,
and cast your lot with adulterers.
You loose your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue for deceit.
You sit and speak 'gainst your brother.
You slander the,
you slander the son of your own mother.
these things you've done, and I kept si-ilence.
8 You thought that I am just like you,
but I'll show you a thing or two,
and set the things in order
before your very own
O-o please consider this.
Think on this, you
that forget God, lest I tear in pieces,
and there be none,
and there will be no one who releases.
The sacrifice of thanksgiving,
this is that which glorifies Me.
And he that orders his way,
I will cause him to see,
to see the salvation of God.
Matthew 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Luke 13:28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
but ye have come to mount Zion; and to the
city of the
living God, heavenly Jerusalem; and to myriads of angels,
23 the universal gathering; and to the assembly of the firstborn who are registered in heaven; and to God, judge of all; and to the spirits of just men made perfect;
24 and to Jesus, mediator of a new covenant; and to the blood of sprinkling, speaking better than Abel.
Ephesians 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach unto the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 and to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery which for ages hath been hid in God who created all things;
10 to the intent that now unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places might be made known through the church the manifold wisdom of God,
11 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for her;
26 that he might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of water in the word,
27 that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Revelation 21:9 ¶ And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunders, saying, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult, and let us give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready . 8 And it was given to her that she should be clothed in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the saints.
2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all be manifested before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done through the body according to what he has practiced, whether good or bad.
11 Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; yet I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.
And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away
25:8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.
When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up
Isaiah 11:12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it
to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who are defiled sanctifies to the purity of the flesh, 14 How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 And because of this He is the Mediator of a new covenant, so that, death having taken place for redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, those who have been called might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
16 For where there is a testament, the death of him who made the testament must of necessity be established. 17 For a testament is confirmed in the case of the dead, since it never has force when he who made the testament is living.
18 Hence neither was the first covenant initiated without blood; 19 For when every commandment according to the law had been spoken by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the scroll of the covenant itself and all the people, 20 Saying, ``This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded to you.'' 21 And both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the service he sprinkled in like manner with the blood. 22 And almost all things are purified by blood according to the law, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23 It was necessary therefore for the examples of the things in the heavens to be purified by these, but the heavenly things themselves, by better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter into a holy place made by hands, a figure of the true, but into heaven itself, to appear now before the face of God for us; 25 Nor in order that He might offer Himself often, just as the high priest enters into the Holy of Holies year by year by the blood of other creatures; 26 Since then He would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world. But now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested for the putting away of sin through the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And inasmuch as it is reserved for men to die once, and after this comes judgment, 28 So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time to those who eagerly await Him, apart from sin, unto salvation.
I exhort you therefore, brothers, through the compassions of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be fashioned according to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and well pleasing and perfect.
2 Corinthians 5:14 For the love of Christ constrains us because we have judged this, that One died for all , therefore all died ; 15 And He died for all that those who live may no longer live to themselves but to Him who died for them and has been raised.
And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon underneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 And she was with child, and she cried out, travailing in birth and being in pain to bring forth.
3 And another sign was seen in heaven; and behold, there was a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. 4 And his tail drags away the third part of the stars of heaven, and he cast them to the earth . And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bring forth, so that when she brings forth he might devour her child. 5 And she brought forth a son, a man-child, who is to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place there prepared by God so that they might nourish her there a thousand two hundred and sixty days.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels went to war with the dragon. And the dragon warred and his angels. 8 And they did not prevail, neither was their place found any longer in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast down, the ancient serpent, he who is called the Devil and Satan, he who deceives the whole inhabited earth ; he was cast to the earth , and his angels were cast down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, Now has come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ, for the accuser of our brothers has been cast down, who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they loved not their soul-life even unto death.
12 Therefore be glad, O heavens and those who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea because the devil has come down to you and has great rage, knowing that he has only a short time.
But which of you, having a slave who is plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, Come immediately and recline at table? 8 Will he not rather say to him, Prepare something that I may dine, and gird yourself and serve me until I eat and drink; and after that you will eat and drink? 9 He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were ordered, does he? 10 So also you, when you do all the things which are ordered you, say, We are unprofitable slaves; we have done what we ought to have done.
Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother as well as mine.
So then the church throughout the whole of Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it was multiplied.
1 Corinthians 11:18
For first of all, when you come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and some part of it I believe. 19 For there must even be parties among you, that those who are approved may become manifest among you.
As therefore you have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, 7 Having been rooted and being built up in Him, and being established in the faith even as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving . 8 Beware that no one carries you off as spoil through his philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ;
2 Corinthians 4:15 For all things are for your sakes that the grace which has abounded through the greater number may cause the thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
9:10 Now He who bountifully supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and cause the fruits of your righteousness to increase. 11 You in everything are being enriched unto all liberality, which works out through us thanksgiving to God, 12 Because the ministry of this service is not only filling up the lack of the saints, but is also abounding through many thanksgivings to God.
Persevere in prayer, watching in it with thanksgiving ,
So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only but now much rather in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 For it is God who operates in you both the willing and the working for His good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmurings and reasonings 15 That you may be blameless and guileless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as luminaries in the world, 16 Holding forth the word of life, so that I may have a boast in the day of Christ that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain.
Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? And not one of them will fall to the earth apart from your Father.
Luke 12:6 Are not five sparrows sold for two assaria? And not one of them is forgotten before God.
Jonah 4:11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and [also] much cattle ?
But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was about to betray Him, said, 5 Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? 6 But he said this not because it mattered to him concerning the poor, but because he was a thief , and holding the purse, carried off what was put into it.
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests to deliver Him up to them. 11 And when they heard this, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he sought a way to deliver Him up opportunely.
Luke 22:3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot and was of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers as to how he might deliver Him up to them. 5 And they rejoiced and promised to give him money. 6 And he consented and sought opportunity to deliver Him up to them apart from the crowd.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
And I saw, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud one sitting like the Son of man, having upon his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Send thy sickle and reap; for the hour of reaping is come, for the harvest of the earth is dried.
16 And he that sat on the cloud put his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.
Since Abraham shall indeed
become a great and mighty nation; and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
1 Kings 13:32 For the word that he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria, shall certainly come to pass.
Ezekiel 1:3 the word of Jehovah came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of Jehovah was there upon him.
